Mr. D. A. King, so-called anti-illegal-immigrant activist, and convicted ex-felon, campaigns and rails almost daily in GA against hard-working immigrants to this country who he claims have entered illegally and should be deported, under the guise of the equal application of “the rule of law”. This week he may have committed an illegal act at the Cobb Commission meeting on Tuesday, August 12, when he displayed publicly, in front of the County Commission, other officials, and citizens, including Mr. Richard Pellegrino, Director of the Cobb Immigrant Alliance, false Mexican I.D. cards containing his picture and name, which he had enlarged and laminated, and boasted that he fraudulently obtained, apparently through acts of forgery and false claims. Under GA State Code, Section 16-9-4, it is unlawful to knowingly acquire and display false identification, hence, Mr. Pellegrino filed a police report, as a witness to a possible crime, with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Department, which is charged with investigating allegations of forgery and fraud in relation to false I.D. Believing that both international and federal laws may have also been broken, Mr. Pellegrino has already filed a complaint with the Mexican Consulate and is in the process of doing the same with the Dept of Homeland Security.
Mr. Pellegrino stated . “If an individual is going to make a livelihood accusing others of committing illegal acts using outlandish and racist scare tactics to frighten the public into believing that undocumented immigrants are criminals, and claiming that the rule of law should be applied equally to all residents of this state and country, then he is not above the law and should provide an example for others to follow, lest he be labeled an ‘illegal’.”

First of all, this issue is just a small symptom of what is boiling just below the surface, and is about to explode in everyone’s faces. It is not a done deal just because Cobb Commission Chairman Sam Olens, (immigration reformer) D.A. King, state Sen. Chip Rogers or anyone else says so.

‘Inalienable rights’ apply to immigrants, too

DEAR EDITOR:

During the six years of my residence in Cobb, I have seen an influx of residents from all over the world, from varied cultural and religious backgrounds, and have witnessed all of the bounties and challenges which this change and diversity brings.

I know that sometimes we might tend to view our immediate surroundings as “the world” and forget that there is an incredible universe of diversity and wonder outside our own neighborhood, county, state and country.

While the Internet and cable TV certainly bring some of this wonder into our homes the only way to really experience it is to travel, both in our country and others, and not only as a tourist to the usual attractions but to really meet other people where they live (to find out that not only are we all really the same, but each culture and each individual has special capacities and a distinct “flavor” to contribute to the whole-or to “the melting pot” of America and humanity).

I have taught my children that they can never really know and fully understand their own selves and their community without experiencing other people and communities, both here and overseas, because sometimes we are just “too close to the trees to see the forest” and we have to see it from another perspective and through the eyes of others.

While traveling with family on July Fourth weekend I had the privilege of visiting an area of the United States in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, which really cherishes and values its immigrants, not getting as caught up in the technical or legal issues of whether they are temporarily undocumented or not, and secure in their history and knowledge that every immigrant population which came to these shores were temporarily undocumented and had to withstand all types of persecution at the hands of a vocal and vociferous minority until the good people of America, which constitute the majority, caused its government to grant them legal and equal status.

And, as I paused to read over and reflect upon our great country’s Declaration of Independence and Constitution, I am secure in my history, as a third-generation descendant of Italian immigrants (who were once considered “illegal” and undocumented; who were blamed for not assimilating and learning English fast enough; who were attacked as taking the jobs of “true” Americans), that the good people of this country will once again welcome the present wave of undocumented immigrants from Latin American and other countries with a pathway to citizenship which they have earned through their blood, sweat and tears on behalf of this country-just as other immigrants did before them.

I am confident that, representing the good people of America, our next Congress and president will live up to the spirit of the stirring words from the “Declaration of Independence”: “We hold … that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

I am sure that they will see that these words and inalienable rights to apply to “all men” and not only to citizens and those with present “legal” status.

So I implore the good people of Cobb and Georgia to also join in with the majority of good Americans around this country, past and present, to welcome our newest immigrants, regardless of their present “legal” status (which will soon change anyway, as noted above), all of whom have worked and are working tirelessly to build and uplift our communities, as all immigrants-all of our ancestors – did before them.

Let us become independent of our irrational and unfounded fears, and help them to pursue happiness, life and liberty in our American tradition – which, in turn, will bring a richer happiness to all of our lives.

Rich Pellegrino: Cobb County Georgia’s village idiot?

Pellegrino has been the subject of several Marietta Daily Journal letters to the editor recently, I hope that I haven’t missed posting any below. I am personally sure that we here in Cobb County Georgia have the most useful village idiot in the state. We salute Rich Pelligrino for showing us all how mindless he truly is, while assisting Jerry Gonzalez and the open borders left.

Rich is a not too bright guy who is need of constant attention and who has adopted Jerry Gonzalez as a hero. Try to be as nice as possible to him…he has trouble thinking, or figuring out what and who really represents a “fringe minority”.

Yawn…warning, Rich’s little missive to the MDJ against my proposal to require ID and proof of legal immigration status for aliens to obtain a business license in Cobb is more than 440 words.

Rich Pellegrino/Letter to the Editor: Latest sign of anti-illegals paranoia

It appears that some Cobb Commissioners, including the chairman, are being influenced by the anti-immigrant rhetoric, fear and paranoia of Dustin Inman Society head D.A. King, disguised in a cloak of reason and security, who requested that “legal residency” be required for Cobb Business Licenses.

Commissioners, please beware and do not be fooled and follow this alleged “reasoning” down the thorny road of hate and fear, especially in this season of good will.

This is just another mean-spirited attempt to drive an entire community further underground – an already embattled community and people (due to the inaction of the federal government and unwise actions of the Cobb sheriff) – a people, like all immigrants before them, who are presently trying to comply with state and county laws and ordinances in order to help feed, shelter and clothe their own families, and to provide employment for others, while expanding the county tax base. What could be more American and Georgian than this?

Yet some would attempt to remove their means of livelihood and would place their families on welfare at the same time complaining about their drain on resources. What logic is this? It is the same twisted logic that prevents these temporarily undocumented good people from getting driver’s licenses in this state so that the law enforcement community’s goals of law and order are aided, traffic safety is really promoted, and space in the jail can be reserved for those who commit real crimes. That is why some local police officers with whom I’ve talked, as well as police departments around the country, are in favor of granting them driver’s licenses – which is completely logical – and why they are against sheriff’s departments acting as agents of immigration enforcement that destroys all efforts at community policing and trust building – completely illogical.

However when the public and elected officials are swayed by the extreme fear and paranoia generating tactics of a loud fringe minority, like King and his followers, this is what happens and all logic (as well has human empathy and compassion) is thrown out the window.

I know, some of you single-minded folks are going to say what you always say when this issue arises, “What don’t you understand about the word “illegal?” but I am sorry. The reason the good Lord gave us brains and minds is so that we can see all sides of an issue. Like a wise man once said: “There are at least three sides to every story” – so nothing is either “black or white” or “legal or illegal.” Another very wise Man said: “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Larry Todd/Letter to the Editor: No ā€˜illegal aliensā€™?

When one’s argument is lacking in substance, you can always resort to semantics.

By redefining “illegal,” the term no longer applies. Continuing with Mr. Pellegrino’s logic, a drug dealer would be reclassified as an “undocumented pharmacist.”

I don’t think the voting public will buy into that logic, as there still is pressure from 85 percent of the voting public to close the borders. It appears we need new legislators to enforce old laws instead of old legislators developing new laws promoting amnesty.

Don’t forget: We were attacked on 9/11 by “undocumented pilots” that killed 3,000 innocent civilians, destroyed two magnificent towers, four commercial aircraft and damaged our Pentagon. The closing of our borders is one small step in the right direction, regardless of your interpretations of “illegal.”
