GALEO action alert, Feb. 28, 2017 – sent by Jerry Gonzalez

Please see the action alert below re the GBI Registry for non-citizens who are jailed. YOUR calls are needed to oppose it!

Information is powerful. GALEO has compiled many links and resources of assistance and information for our immigrant community. Many of it is available in several languages, including Spanish. Please see below (or click here) and share the information widely.

We must work together and ensure our community remains safe. As we learn more, we will continue to post on our Facebook page.

Lots continues to happen. YOUR VOICE now matters more than ever!
Please join our advocacy efforts by joining our texting campaign. The image to the right is our latest way to engage with our supporters in a timely manner and make our efforts more effective. Please stay engaged by texting the word IMMIGRATION to the short code number 864-237. This will add you to our texting program to ensure we speak up at needed times. We will continue our focus on the BRIDGE ACT and work against anti-immigrant initiatives in Georgia.

Please see other ways in which you can engage below.

Once again, as 2017 continues, please consider the GALEO Latino Community Development Fund as you prioritize your annual donations. Please follow the link here: https://galeo.ejoinme.org/MyPages/DonationPage/tabid/127559/Default.aspx

Thank you for your support!

Help us fight anti-immigrant legislation! Calls needed NOW before 2 PM today!

Please see the action alert sent below from our friends at Asians Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta:

We have some urgent calls to action for you today to help us fight anti-immigrant legislation. Please make your calls or show up in person to oppose these bills, and share with your contacts as well.

CALL HOUSE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE before 2pm and ask them to vote NO on HB 452, which allows the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to create a registry of undocumented immigrants who have been detained by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), those who have been arrested, and those that are currently serving or have served time in jail. This bill places a target on undocumented immigrants, and puts them at risk for further discrimination and deportation. Tell these four legislators who sit on the subcommittee to VOTE NO AGAINST BIGOTRY AND INTOLERANCE IN GEORGIA!

Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee): 404.656.0325
Micah Gravely (R-Douglasville): 404.656.0152
Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert): 404.656.5105
J. Collins (R-Valdosta): 404.656.0109

SHOW UP to the committee hearings for HB 452 (today at 2pm in 406 CLOB) and SB 231 (today at 4pm in 307 CLOB). Attend these meetings to show our legislators that you care about these issues. As mentioned above, HB 452 would create a registry of undocumented immigrants who have been detained by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), those who have been arrested, and those that are currently serving or have served time in jail. SB 231 also includes a registry, but goes further and excludes those with DACA status from entering certain professions, denies them in-state tuition, and access to the HOPE scholarship. (note: CLOB is the Coverdell Legislative Office Building which is adjacent to the Capitol)

Sincerely,

Aisha Yaqoob
