Saxby Chambliss (R-Moultrie) and Johnny Isakson (R-east Cobb) drew the hard line on immigration legislation Thursday by voting to kill the bill they co-authored that drew criticism from conservatives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Chambliss and Isakson sent a letter to President George W. Bush calling on him to consider an emergency supplemental bill of between $5 billion and $7 billion to bolster border security.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, that suggestion was not listened to,&#8221; Chambliss said&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>East Cobb immigration activist D.A. King said the Senate&#8217;s vote is &#8220;a big step forward for the rule of law and a big step for the voice of the American people in their own country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>King said he knows the debate is not over yet and added the American people deserve &#8220;defended and defined borders.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said Bush &#8220;has no intention of ever doing so&#8221; and cited corporate interests as the driving force behind the White House&#8217;s unwavering position on no border security despite the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They want to create a free flow of people that free trade requires,&#8221; King said.<\/p>\n<p>Isakson said the problem would not be solved within the short term and does not know why Bush hasn&#8217;t shown a greater commitment to secure the border.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdjonline.com\/268\/10264145.txt\">entire report here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marietta Daily Journal today Senators make about-face on immigration Friday, June 29, 2007 2:24 AM EDT By Michael French Marietta Daily Journal Staff Writer WASHINGTON &#8211; U.S. Sens.
