{"id":6454,"date":"2016-03-01T20:59:47","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T01:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.org\/blog\/?p=6454"},"modified":"2016-03-01T21:07:49","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T02:07:49","slug":"georgia-senate-passes-measure-aimed-at-immigrants-without-legal-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.org\/blog\/2016\/03\/01\/georgia-senate-passes-measure-aimed-at-immigrants-without-legal-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia Senate passes measure aimed at immigrants without legal status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Georgia Senate passes measure aimed at immigrants without legal status<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Feb. 29, 2016 by Jeremy Redmon \/<em> The Atlanta Journal-Constitution<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Georgia would create special driver\u2019s licenses and ID cards that more clearly identify immigrants without legal status under controversial legislation the Republican-controlled Senate approved on a 37-17 vote Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cdriving safety cards\u201d and \u201cspecial identification cards\u201d would be issued to immigrants who have received temporary deportation deferrals and would carry the label: \u201cNo lawful status.\u201d The Georgia driver\u2019s licenses and ID cards now issued to deferred action recipients say \u201climited-term.\u201d As of May of last year, 3,468 of them have been issued.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia now issues \u201climited-term\u201d driver\u2019s licenses to immigrants who have received temporary deportation deferrals.<\/p>\n<p>The sponsor of Senate Bill 6 \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/joshmckoon\/2015\/02\/10\/unlike-mexico-georgia-is-issuing-drivers-licenses-to-illegal-immigrants-n1955023\/page\/full\">Republican Sen. Joshua McKoon of Columbus<\/a> \u2014 said the measure would help prevent voter fraud and terrorism.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/media.cmgdigital.com\/shared\/lt\/lt_cache\/aresize\/300x300\/img\/photos\/2016\/02\/29\/7f\/04\/limited-term-GA-DL.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><em>Georgia now issues \u201climited-term\u201d driver\u2019s licenses to illegal aliens who have received temporary deportation deferrals. It is the same license given to aliens with legal, temporary visas, like Mercedes and Kia executives.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have very little in the way of identity verification for people that are receiving these licenses and who have no lawful status,\u201d McKoon told the Senate moments before the vote. \u201cSo you can easily see a situation where someone who wants to do harm \u2014 who wants to, for example, pursue a terrorist act of some kind \u2014 using a limited-term Georgia driver\u2019s license to access a secure government facility and then carrying out an attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under questioning from Democratic state Sen. Lester Jackson of Savannah, McKoon couldn\u2019t identify any instances where people with deferred action <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2014\/10\/22\/ineligible-daca-beneficiaries-discovered-on-nc-voting-rolls\/\">committed voter fraud<\/a> or acts of terrorism in Georgia. Opponents also argued the measure would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.org\/info\/who_was_dustin_inman.html\">\u201cstigmatize\u201d people<\/a>, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer money and damage the state\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink about it. Why are we doing this?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GALEO.org\/photos\/a.10152037855216356.1073741868.19368616355\/10152038369746356\/?type=3&amp;theater\">Republican state Sen. Tommie Williams<\/a> of Lyons told the Senate before voting against the bill. \u201cWe are doing this because there are those in the hall that do not like brown people.
