On January 12, 2009, the Gwinnett County Sheriff\u2019s Department and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) began a 26-day surge at the jail to check all inmates for their immigration status.<\/p>\n
At the end of the 26 days, ICE had placed detainers on 914 foreign born inmates in order to begin deportation proceedings. These numbers revealed that 68 percent of our foreign born population at the jail is here illegally.<\/p>\n
The following chart lists the charges on those inmates with detainers. Fifty-four percent of the 914 had a previous criminal history. The vast majority of those with prior criminal histories had previous criminal histories in Gwinnett.<\/p>\n

Violation DUI No Driver\u2019s License Other Felony Probation Violation (Misdemeanor) *54% of the individuals charged have a prior criminal history<\/strong>Note: On those with multiple charges, only the most serious offense is listed.<\/p>\n As many are already aware, the Gwinnett County Sheriff\u2019s Office applied for the 287(g) program in March of 2008 and received the unanimous support of the Gwinnett County Commission in funding 18 deputy positions in order to implement the program.<\/p>\n The 287(g) program would allow deputies, under the supervision of assigned ICE agents, to place detainers on those inmates who are in the U.S. illegally. Those illegal aliens would then be turned over to ICE for deportation proceedings. Currently, we are still waiting on approval for the 287(g) program from ICE.<\/p>\n Sheriff Conway again would like to thank the citizens of Gwinnett for their continued interest in this program. We will keep everyone updated on the status of 287(g) as that information becomes available.<\/p>\n
