{"id":1913,"date":"2008-11-10T22:57:20","date_gmt":"2008-11-11T02:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.com\/blog\/?p=1913"},"modified":"2008-11-10T22:57:20","modified_gmt":"2008-11-11T02:57:20","slug":"terrific-and-so-true-letter-to-the-editor-by-my-friend-paul-nachman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.org\/blog\/2008\/11\/10\/terrific-and-so-true-letter-to-the-editor-by-my-friend-paul-nachman\/","title":{"rendered":"Terrific ( AND SO TRUE!) letter to the editor by my friend Paul Nachman!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Seattle Times (online only) \u2013 10\/20<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hire our children instead<\/p>\n<p>In extolling the economic benefits of illegal-alien agricultural labor, Seattle University law professor Richard Delgado, in effect, serves up the tiresomely familiar &#8220;lettuce argument&#8221;: If illegal aliens aren&#8217;t working the fields, lettuce will cost consumers $5 per head.<\/p>\n<p>But UC Davis agricultural economist Philip Martin has shown that the field-labor cost included in a $1 head of lettuce is about $.06<\/p>\n<p>Thus, we could triple wages for picking the crops \u2014 at which point Americans would do the jobs \u2014 and the cost of a head of lettuce would rise by 12 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers are similar for other crops.<\/p>\n<p>So a family that spends $15 per week on produce would shell out about $100 more per year, a negligible tab for ending what&#8217;s virtually modern-day slave labor.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens taking such jobs needn&#8217;t regard them as careers.
