The nation’s unemployment rate zoomed to a five-year high of 6.1 percent in August as employers slashed 84,000 jobs, dramatic proof of the mounting damage a deeply troubled economy is inflicting on workers and businesses alike… <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Some Americans and lawmakers make the common error to think that unemployment figures measure people without jobs. Rather, they measure only those people who are actively looking for jobs and have signed up with government unemployment agencies. The potential labor pool is far larger than the government reports because so many people are not in the labor market at all for the following reasons: <\/strong><\/p>\n

they were laid off and ran out of unemployment benefits;
\nthey stopped work because of illness, injury, pregnancy and they didn’t have enough incentive to look for a job or the jobs weren’t attractive enough;
\nthey failed to find a job for so long that they gave up; or
\nthey are disabled (the vast majority of disabled American cannot get a job). <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
