{"id":1724,"date":"2008-08-03T11:34:19","date_gmt":"2008-08-03T15:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.com\/blog\/?p=1724"},"modified":"2008-08-03T11:34:55","modified_gmt":"2008-08-03T15:34:55","slug":"mobile-mexican-consulate-passing-out-matricula-consular-ids-think-of-them-as-mini-anmesties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.org\/blog\/2008\/08\/03\/mobile-mexican-consulate-passing-out-matricula-consular-ids-think-of-them-as-mini-anmesties\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile Mexican consulate passing out matricula consular IDs &#8211; think of them as &#8220;mini-amnesties&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Chattanooga Times<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Aug. 2, 2008 <\/p>\n<p><strong>Mexican consulate in Dalton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By: Perla Trevizo <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>DALTON, Ga. \u2014 Due to the high demand for renewal of Mexican passports and IDs, the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta is sending a \u201cpermanent mobile consulate\u201d through Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee in Dalton this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou save the time and money it takes to go to Atlanta,\u201d said Adolfo Sanchez, who called to make an appointment last week and was waiting here Friday to get his passport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people work and can\u2019t go to Atlanta, or they lose a whole day from work just to go to the consulate,\u201d he added. \u201cIf they\u2019re missing a document, they have to come back without getting anything accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People may call and reserve one of the 1,200 appointments available from Wednesday through Sunday at each stop.<\/p>\n<p>Mexican Consul General Salvador de Lara said in a prepared statement the \u201cpermanent mobile consulate\u201d was requested by Mexico\u2019s President Felipe Calderon to meet the high demand for updated registrations and to eliminate the need to travel to Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>HISPANIC POPULATION<\/p>\n<p>* Georgia: 70,229<\/p>\n<p>* Alabama: 11,497<\/p>\n<p>* Tennessee: 19,324<\/p>\n<p>Source: U.S. Census, 2006 estimates<\/p>\n<p>MOBILE MEXICAN CONSULATE<\/p>\n<p>* Next stop is Summerdale, Ala., from Wednesday through Aug. 10.<\/p>\n<p>* Third stop is Nashville, Aug. 13-17<\/p>\n<p>* For the complete schedule, visit www.consulmexatlanta.org<\/p>\n<p>* For more information call the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta (404) 266-2233<\/p>\n<p>TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT<\/p>\n<p>* Call 1-877&#8211;639-4835<br \/>\nThe consulate in Atlanta serves Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey run the risk of being stopped by state troopers in Alabama and Georgia that are part of the 287(g) \u2014 a federal program that trains local law enforcement agents to enforce immigration laws \u2014 which leads to the deportation of those stopped for traffic violations,\u201d Mr. de Lara said.<\/p>\n<p>While U.S. Census 2006 estimates were that there were 100,000 Hispanics in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, acting Consul Maricela Quijano said the consulate estimates there are 800,000 Mexicans in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The number of passports they\u2019ve issued has tripled or quadrupled during this current year, Ms. Quijano said.<\/p>\n<p>The consulate in Atlanta expects this year to issue about 80,000 documents, and about 32,000 through the mobile consulate, a 60 percent increase from 2007, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also opened one Saturday every three weeks and they\u2019ve added 100 appointments every Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Quijano said because of the demand, the next appointment available in Atlanta is in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are hoping that through these initiatives we can reduce the waiting time in a month and open up more slots for people to go to Atlanta,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Braulia Salazar, who traveled from Chattanooga to Dalton to get her passport and a matricula consular, or Mexican ID card, said she was extremely happy she got an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me it\u2019s really hard to go to Atlanta because I have two young children,\u201d she said as waited in line.<\/p>\n<p>Others weren\u2019t so lucky. Mr. Sanchez said four of his sons weren\u2019t able to get one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of people were left out,\u201d he said. \u201cThey should do this more often.
