{"id":159,"date":"2006-06-02T11:48:29","date_gmt":"2006-06-02T15:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.com\/blog\/?p=159"},"modified":"2006-06-02T11:52:21","modified_gmt":"2006-06-02T15:52:21","slug":"kate-smith-is-deadand-i-dont-feel-so-good-myself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.org\/blog\/2006\/06\/02\/kate-smith-is-deadand-i-dont-feel-so-good-myself\/","title":{"rendered":"Kate Smith is dead&#8230;.and I don&#8217;t feel so good myself"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lilesnet.com\/patriotic\/music\/kate_smith__god_bless_america.htm\">Kate Smith<\/a>   is dead &#8211; and I don\u2019t feel so good myself.<\/p>\n<p>The state of Michigan has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mi.gov\/mde\/0,1607,7-140-22709_31168---,00.html \">already eliminated the words \u201cAmerica\u201d and \u201cAmerican<\/a>\u201d from its MEAP [Michigan Educational Assessment Program ] test.<\/p>\n<p>Now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20060525\/OPINION01\/605250371\/1008 \">this from the Detroit New<\/a>s <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Michigan&#8217;s politically correct bureaucrats almost killed the use of &#8220;America&#8221; in social studies classes. Fortunately, state school Superintendent Mike Flanagan says he is stopping this nonsense. But taxpayers and parents must remain vigilant against this dumbing down of our students<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> An employee of the Michigan Department of Education, Karen Todorov, recently suggested that<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedustininmansociety.org\/articles\/art2006may24.html  \"> Michigan teachers not use the words \u201cAmerica\u201d<\/a> or \u201cAmerican\u201d in their teaching duties. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We use the United States after the founding of the nation, and before that &#8216;the colonies of North America&#8217; or &#8216;North Americans,'&#8221; she wrote in an e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press quotes Todorov as saying, \u201cit&#8217;s important in an increasingly global world to recognize that America also refers to other countries in South America and elsewhere in North America\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d&#8221;Our intention is as we&#8217;re moving forward in our global world that we recognize that other people share this hemisphere with us,&#8221; Todorov said on a Detroit radio show.<\/p>\n<p>I am not making this up.<\/p>\n<p>We are all \u201cNorth Americans\u201d you see. It would be more \u201cinternationally friendly\u201d to say so. Less exclusionary.<\/p>\n<p>Less \u201cethnocentric\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Less American &#8211; more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spp.gov\/ \">borderless continent<\/a>  with the \u201cfree flow of goods and people \u201cI am thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Along with a common language, Christmas and our borders, the word \u201cAmerica\u201d is headed to the scrap heap of politically incorrectness.<br \/>\n:<br \/>\nI was thinking about Todorov when I read about Harry Reid and Ken Salazar.<\/p>\n<p>Before the United States Senate voted for another amnesty to illegals &#8211; both employers and aliens &#8211; last week, Senator James M. Inhofe, offered an amendment to the now passed \u201camnesty \u2013again\u201d legislation that would make English the \u201cofficial language\u201d. A U.S. Senator from Nevada, Harry Reid, had this to say:<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/national\/20060518-114129-1805r.htm \">amendment is racist<\/a>. I think it&#8217;s directed basically to people who speak Spanish,&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>Before it was eventually approved, the wording of the amendment was dutifully changed to \u201cnational language\u201d.<\/p>\n<p> Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado dismissed the amendment as \u201cdivisive and anti-American\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he meant \u201cun-United States\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kate Smith is dead &#8211; and I don\u2019t feel so good myself.
