The Hispanic Institute Proposes CNN Boycott; Cites Lou Dobbs\u2019 Anti-Immigration Crusade<\/strong> ( note from D.A. – they mean illegal immigration [ a crime] – real, legal immigrants DO NOT REQUIRE AMNESTY<\/strong>!)<\/em><\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (June 3) — The Hispanic Institute today announced that it will mount a Latino boycott of CNN to protest the cable news network\u2019s ongoing distortion of facts surrounding U.S. immigration issues, especially in commentaries and reports on \u201cLou Dobbs Tonight.\u201d <\/p>\n

The nonprofit organization said the proposed boycott will begin today June 3, 2008 and will seek to stop Hispanic viewership of all CNN outlets, including the Spanish language service. There are now 12.14 million Hispanic television households in the U.S., according to Doug Darfield, Sr. Vice President of multicultural measurement for The Nielsen Company. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking this step after years of CNN management\u2019s failure to rein in Mr. Dobbs\u2019s irresponsible assertions about immigrants and their impact on our country and its institutions,\u201d Gus West, THI board chair, said in making the announcement. He added that THI will work with other national Hispanic organizations to broaden support for the proposed boycott. <\/p>\n

West noted that THI called for censure of Dobbs two years ago, following three years of inflammatory on-air rhetoric about undocumented immigrants. \u201cThe lack of any meaningful response from CNN\u2019s management, or any abatement of Mr. Dobbs\u2019 offensive tirades, makes it clear to us that the company supports his misleading and often inaccurate positions,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

The large and growing U.S. Hispanic population represents a significant television market, West said, one that CNN can ill afford to ignore. \u201cThe State of the Media 2008,\u201d published by The Project for Excellence in Journalism, noted that Latino purchasing power was $850 billion in 2007, and, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, total TV advertising dollars spent to reach Hispanics in 2006 was more than $3 billion. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe will mobilize this important market segment to make our strong convictions heard,\u201d West said, adding that THI is not alone in its criticism of Dobbs. In \u201cFear & Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News,\u201d an extensive new study published May 21, the Washington-based Media Matters Action Network reported that cable news program hosts Dobbs, Bill O\u2019Reilly of Fox News Channel and Glenn Beck of CNN-Headline News \u201cserve up a steady diet of fear, anger and resentment on the topic of illegal immigration.\u201d <\/p>\n

However, Dobbs was singled out by the Media Matters study as \u201cone of the most obsessed with the topic.\u201d The study added that the \u201cLou Dobbs Tonight\u201d program \u201cmight be more properly called \u2018Lou Dobbs Crusades Against Illegal Immigration Tonight.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

It is clear to THI, West said, that a boycott is \u201cthe appropriate vehicle to address CNN\u2019s obvious disregard for the concerns of Latino viewers and all others who value factual, responsible news and information.\u201d <\/p>\n

\nCita la Cruzada de Antiinmigraci\u00f3n de Lou Dobbs <\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (3 de junio) \u2013 El Instituto Hispano anunci\u00f3 hoy que est\u00e1 por preparar boicoteo Latino dirigido a la cadena de noticias por cable CNN, como protesta a la continua distorsi\u00f3n de hechos circundantes a cuestiones de inmigraci\u00f3n estadounidenses, particularmente nos referimos a los comentarios e informes hechos por el Se\u00f1or “Lou Dobbs, en su programa de Tonight (Noche)”. <\/p>\n

La organizaci\u00f3n civil anunci\u00f3 que el propuesto boicoteo comenzar\u00e1 el 4 de junio y procurar\u00e1 detener el \u00edndice de teleaudiencia hispano en todas las transmisiones de CNN, incluyendo el servicio en espa\u00f1ol que tiene la cadena de noticias. Por ahora, existen 12.14 millones de familias Hispanas en los Estados Unidos, detall\u00f3 Dough Darfield, Vicepresidente Sr. de Medidas Multiculturales, empresa Nielsen.
\n\u201cEstamos dando est\u00e9 paso despu\u00e9s de varios a\u00f1os de fracaso, debido a que los directivos de CNN han permitido que el Sr. Dobbs contin\u00fae con aserciones irresponsables sobre el tema de inmigrantes indocumentados y el impacto que tienen sobre nuestro pa\u00eds y sus instituciones\u201d, dijo Gus West, Miembro del Consejo del Instituto Hispano, al hacer el anuncio. A\u00f1adi\u00f3 que el Instituto Hispano (THI, por sus siglas al Ingl\u00e9s) va a trabajar en conjunto con otras organizaciones hispanas a nivel nacional, con la finalidad de extender el apoyo al propuesto boicoteo. <\/p>\n

West not\u00f3, que a pesar de los dos a\u00f1os de esfuerzos por parte del Instituto de solicitar la censura de Dobbs, le continuaron tres a\u00f1os m\u00e1s de ret\u00f3rica inflamatoria sobre los inmigrantes indocumentados. \u201cLa falta de una respuesta significativa por parte de los directivos de CNN, nos aclara que la empresa apoya las ofensivas y posiciones inexactas del Sr. Dobbs\u201d, manifest\u00f3. <\/p>\n

La poblaci\u00f3n creciente y numerosa de estadounidenses Hispanos representa un mercado significativo para las televisoras, West mencion\u00f3. En \u201cMiedo y Odio en Horario Estelar: Canales de Cable y Mitos sobre Inmigraci\u00f3n\u201d, estudio publicado el 21 de mayo por Media Matters Action Network (Acci\u00f3n de Medios de Comunicaci\u00f3n en Cadena), empresa basada en Washington, divulg\u00f3 que los anfitriones de programa de noticias de cable Dobbs, Bill O’Reilly del canal de Fox News y Glenn Beck de CNN-Hedline News (noticias de primera plana) \u201cofrecen una dieta constante de miedo, rabia y resentimiento en el tema de inmigraci\u00f3n de indocumentados\u201d. <\/p>\n

Sin embargo, seg\u00fan el estudio de Media Matters Action Network, Dobbs, \u201ces uno de los m\u00e1s obsesionados con el tema\u201d. El estudio a\u00f1adi\u00f3 que \u201cLou Dobbs Tonight\u201d, \u201cser\u00eda m\u00e1s apropiado si el programa se llamara \u2018La Cruzada de Lou Dobbs en Contra de la Inmigraci\u00f3n de Indocumentados Tonight\u2019. <\/p>\n

Es claro que THI, dijo West, que el boicot que proponemos es \u201cel veh\u00edculo apropiado para informar la obvia indiferencia de CNN hacia los televidentes Latinos y para aquellos que valoran la veracidad de la informaci\u00f3n en la noticia. <\/p>\n
