King, the head of an Atlanta-area group that opposes illegal immigration, heard word of <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/27\/us\/politics\/anthony-kennedy-retire-supreme-court.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justice Anthony M. Kennedy\u2019s retirement<\/a>while vacationing on St. Simons Island, off the Georgia coast. He was elated thinking of the conservative who might replace him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Kristen Clarke, a civil rights lawyer, heard the news on the radio not far from the Supreme Court itself, as she was driving to a Capitol Hill hearing about the Voting Rights Act. She figured her job defending voting rights was about to become much more of a challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">In West Hollywood, Curtis Collins was working out at Barry\u2019s Bootcamp, and he said the Supreme Court justice\u2019s announcement dominated the Wednesday afternoon conversation among the predominantly gay group of men exercising there. \u201cEverybody was talking about it, how appalling it was,\u201d he said. \u201cEveryone was saying they were scared. We don\u2019t normally talk about politics in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-1-wrapper\" class=\"ResponsiveAd-storyBodyAd--35v2w\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-1-slug\" class=\"ResponsiveAd-adSlug--3H3QM\">\n<p>And in North Carolina, as the news of the impending retirement flashed on Amy Mahle\u2019s phone, she wondered whether God might soon answer her prayers \u2014 and let her finally see the high court overturn <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/27\/us\/politics\/kennedy-abortion-roe-v-wade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roe v. Wade<\/a>, the landmark 1973 case establishing a constitutional right to abortion. \u201cI think it\u2019s possible,\u201d she said. \u201cI would love that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn StoryBodyCompanionColumn\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1yeziki\">\n<div class=\"css-nfnnd5 styles-embeddedInteractive--2frSu styles-sizeMediumInteractive--3izvz\" data-id=\"100000005979207\" data-slug=\"story-test-breaking-latest-scotus\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"css-md890q\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/admin\/100000005979207.embedded.html?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"286\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">It is not exactly shocking when an 81-year-old man decides to retire after 30 years on the job. And yet, Justice Kennedy\u2019s announcement this week still managed to deliver a powerful jolt to the nation. His departure comes at a fragile time for the country, as a first-term president has vigorously assumed the role of disrupter-in-chief. President Trump said he wanted to pick a jurist who could serve at least 40 years on the court, potentially cementing the president\u2019s impact on the country for generations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"styles-interactivePromo--3_gsm\">\n<div class=\"styles-interactiveImageContainer--2lk7i\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2018\/06\/27\/us\/kennedy-retirement-supreme-court-median-promo-1530156010919\/kennedy-retirement-supreme-court-median-promo-1530156010919-articleLarge.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"styles-interactiveInfo--3lPBM\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-wrapper\" class=\"ResponsiveAd-flexFrame--1PVri ResponsiveAd-storyBodyAd--35v2w\">\n<div class=\"ad story-ad-2-wrapper\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-2\" data-google-query-id=\"CPul7bzTgNwCFZi2yAodemoBmQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/29390238\/nyt\/us_5__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">For many liberals, the departure was almost too much to bear, particularly after a month in which they were disappointed by Supreme Court rulings that, among other things, narrowly <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/26\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-trump-travel-ban.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upheld Mr. Trump\u2019s travel ban<\/a>, <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/27\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-unions-organized-labor.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">curtailed union power<\/a>, and let stand a plan to purge state <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/11\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-upholds-ohios-purge-of-voting-rolls.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">voter rolls in Ohio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u201cWe are so much more screwed today than we were yesterday, and we were pretty screwed yesterday,\u201d said Monica Russo, a 41-year-old stay at home mother on Long Island, who had just put her daughter down for a nap when she saw the news on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">Coming on the heels of Tuesday\u2019s decision upholding the travel ban, Ms. Russo felt overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1i0edl6 e2kc3sl0\">\u201cMy stomach dropped,\u201d she said. \u201cI know that Trump is hellbent on replacing any justice with somebody who would be a threat to reproductive rights.
