AJC Political Insider and fading pretense

Taking a break from the Confederate flag and redefinition-of-marriage marathon, the AJC’s Political Insider, Jim Galloway, turns his editorial keyboard to steering the public and legislators away from important – and potentially life-saving – state immigration legislation aimed at full cooperation with ICE by local law enforcement agencies. At least the pretense has faded to “barely there.”

Spinning hard, Galloway writes “Georgia has no “sanctuary cities” — but no matter. Josh McKoon doesn’t like the friendly way that Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties are looking at illegal immigrants” writes Galloway on McKoon’s addition to pending legislation. Note that Galloway hopes nobody notices that by near universal definition, the three metro-Atlanta counties he mentions as “friendly” have in place the same policies that make San Francisco a “sanctuary city.”

We say “to-may-to, to-mah-to.”

San Francisco does not honor federal requests to detain illegal aliens. Neither do Fulton, DeKalb or Clayton counties in Georgia. Most Americans call that “sanctuary.”

So to help Galloway out: Georgia has confirmed “sanctuary counties.”

Oh, and if it matters what Senator McKoon really said, we post it HERE.

26 days: Criminal illegal aliens in Gwinnett County Georgia: Reality bites.

26 days: Criminal illegal aliens in Gwinnett County Georgia: Reality bites.

On January 12, 2009, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department and Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) began a 26-day surge at the jail to check all inmates for their immigration status.

At the end of the 26 days, ICE had placed detainers on 914 foreign born inmates in order to begin deportation proceedings. These numbers revealed that 68 percent of our foreign born population at the jail is here illegally.

The following chart lists the charges on those inmates with detainers. Fifty-four percent of the 914 had a previous criminal history. The vast majority of those with prior criminal histories had previous criminal histories in Gwinnett.

GEORGIA IMMIGRATION POLL THAT REPUBLICANS IGNORE: Registered voters in Georgia overwhelmingly oppose amnesty when asked about immigration’s impact on American jobs, according to a recent poll

“The poll also showed lopsided support for a pending state bill that prevent illegals in Georgia from getting drivers’ licenses.”

See the poll questions and responses HERE.

From the Daily Caller:

“Registered voters in Georgia overwhelmingly oppose amnesty when asked about immigration’s impact on American jobs, according to a new poll.

Ninety percent of Republicans and 70 percent of Democrats said that Americans “should get the future jobs in Georgia” prior to the hiring of foreign workers.

Only 5.3 percent of Republicans say jobs should go to the cheapest workers, either Americans or foreign. This compares to 12.8 percent of Democrats and 16.2 percent of independents who say the same.

Those answers contradict the conventional media portrayal of GOP voters as anti-worker, and highlight the growing GOP focus on the lower-income workers who strongly oppose wage-cutting immigration. That populist trend helped businessman David Purdue win his Senate seat in 2014, despite his conflict with the state’s Chamber of Commerce.

“We asked clear, straightforward questions on the topic of jobs, immigration and enforcement,” said D.A. King, founder of the society, in a statement.

The answers showed “the majority of Georgians comprehend the connection of employment and wages to the importation of large numbers of foreign workers and incrementally deferring to legally dubious [November] executive amnesty decrees from Barack Obama,” King said.

The poll also showed lopsided support for a pending state bill that prevent illegals in Georgia from getting drivers’ licenses…” More HERE.

September 3, 2014 (ATLANTA, GA)- Fulton County Commission scheduled a vote today on a Resolution urging the Fulton County Sheriff to “implement a policy to decline detainer requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”

Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, testified today before the Fulton County Commission urging them to adopt the proposed resolution which was co-sponsored by four County Commissioners and led by Commissioner Joan Gardner. The Fulton County Commission had heard from community members of SONG, GLAHR and 9 to 5, in previous weeks of public comment period educating the commissioners on the issue and why the immigration holds were bad public policy and bad for our communities.
Gonzalez, issued the following statement after the Fulton County Commission passed a resolution, 6-0, today urging the Fulton County Sheriff to decline ICE hold requests:

“On behalf of GALEO, I would like to commend Fulton County Commissioners’ leadership and resolution urging the Fulton County Sheriff to stop honoring the ICE hold requests in order to keep families together but to also enhance public safety. We urge the Fulton County Sheriff to move forward quickly and implement the recommendation.

Since Fulton County is the first jurisdiction in the state with such a recommendation, GALEO would also like to encourage other jurisdictions in the state to adopt similar policies and stop honoring the hold requests from ICE.”

What Is DACA
On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal. They are also eligible for work authorization. Deferred action is a use of prosecutorial discretion to defer removal action against an individual for a certain period of time. Deferred action does not provide lawful status.
