WASHINGTON – U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss (R-Moultrie) and Johnny Isakson (R-east Cobb) drew the hard line on immigration legislation Thursday by voting to kill the bill they co-authored that drew criticism from conservatives.

Earlier this month, Chambliss and Isakson sent a letter to President George W. Bush calling on him to consider an emergency supplemental bill of between $5 billion and $7 billion to bolster border security.

“Unfortunately, that suggestion was not listened to,” Chambliss said…

East Cobb immigration activist D.A. King said the Senate’s vote is “a big step forward for the rule of law and a big step for the voice of the American people in their own country.”

King said he knows the debate is not over yet and added the American people deserve “defended and defined borders.”

He said Bush “has no intention of ever doing so” and cited corporate interests as the driving force behind the White House’s unwavering position on no border security despite the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

“They want to create a free flow of people that free trade requires,” King said.

Isakson said the problem would not be solved within the short term and does not know why Bush hasn’t shown a greater commitment to secure the border.
